What are bunions?

Bunions are progressive joint deformities that lead to an enlarged bump on the side of your big toe. Your big toe may be left angled mildly or sharply toward your smaller toes, which can continue to worsen over time.

This toe joint deformity tends to occur for a variety of reasons. For instance, if you have an inherited faulty foot structure that leaves your toe joints unstable, your big toe can get pushed out of alignment, and that bony bump can start gradually developing.

Many bunions develop as a result of abnormal pressure on your toe joints. If you have excessive pronation and roll your foot inwards while walking, or regularly wear shoes with little room in the toe box, you risk developing a bunion. Your chances of bunions may also be high if you have:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Gout in your big toe
  • Toe injuries

Because bunions are structural deformities that can lead to ongoing pain and secondary issues, including the development of hammertoes, it’s important to have your bunion treated early on.

Do I need treatment for bunions?

Yes! Even if you have bunion pain that seems mild or sporadic, you should still plan on coming into the office of Dr. Henry Tseng for treatment. Dr. Tseng can intervene and help delay the progression of your bunion and work to alleviate any discomfort you have. It’s especially important to have a bunion evaluation if your bunion is associated with:

  • Burning sensations
  • Redness and swelling
  • Tenderness or numbness
  • Limited toe range-of-motion

Dr. Tseng is an established bunion expert. He provides a wide variety of innovative bunion solutions, so you can expect fast and effective relief.

How are bunions treated?

In most cases, Dr. Tseng begins with conservative bunion treatments to try to get you more comfortable. Your bunion treatment plan may include:

  • Padding
  • Acupuncture
  • Custom orthotics
  • Range-of-motion exercises
  • Multiwave locked system (MLS) laser sessions (to reduce pain and increase circulation)

If you’re continuing to experience bunion pain or have a serious bunion deformity, Dr. Tseng could recommend surgery through a procedure known as a bunionectomy. Modern bunionectomy procedures involve removing the bony bump, taking out a small wedge of bone, or releasing any tight soft tissue. Dr. Tseng carefully realigns and straightens your big toe joint, so your painful bunion soon becomes a thing of your past.
